You are not alone

Being liberal in the quilting world can feel isolating and that is why BadAss Quilters Society exists.  We are here to offer social support and community to liberal quilters and crafters who care about living in a world that values diversity and equality.

We believe that Love is Love, Science is Real, Reproductive Rights are Human Rights, Black Lives Matter and being neutral puts you on the side of the oppressor.

We do our best to be the strongest, loudest and best examples of what it means to be good humans living their lives on the left and loving side of history.

If this is you, welcome, you have found your people.

Hi, I am Maddie Kertay, founder of BadAss Quilters Society. I am a liberal AF, human who craves like minded community and does my best to be a supportive bright-light, truth-teller in an industry that favors shutting up, not rocking the boat and for women to stay in their place. I say “fuck that” and if you want to know more click on my About Maddie page for more about what you can expect here.

Scrap Happy Bookends

At heart I am a practical girl who likes order wrapped up in a bit of pretty and these Scrap Happy Bookends do just that. I have more sewing books than is seemly for a girl my age (ahem!) and given that many of them are of the paper bound variety they tend to...

Snowball Quilt Round-Up

Spring might be just around the corner but it does not mean that it is too late for a fast and easy SnowBall Quilt.  I was reminded of this pattern as I was reshuffling my quilts, packing away the Fall and Winter colored quilts in exchange for the lighter and...

Trapunto for the Modern Quilt – Part 1

Trapunto is the amazing process of adding extra physical texture and visual relief to a fabric surface by either  stuffing or   pre-quilting selected areas of a quilt top in order to gain this lift. There are multiple ways to do it and even a couple of ways to fake...

Care Labels and Quilting Fabric.

When it comes to quilting most of us are sewing with cotton fabric but at times we might be sewing with something odd and it is good to know how to treat that fabric for best results. Today the industry uses their own form of communication on the matter and I like to...

Perfect Circles for Quilting and Craft

Circles are very popular right now in the sewing and quilting world but they can be sort of bear to make unless you know this little tip. This version makes a tidy finished edge circle that is just right for quilting, crafting and sewing in general. You Will Need-...

Picking what to Quilt on Your Quilt Top

The truth is that a fantastic quilt top can be ruined by badly thought out or just boring quilting and some of the most deadly boring tops can be brought to life when creative quilting design is employed. Making a top is easy ( well not EASY) but there are WAY more...

The Quilt Guy Retreat!

As a mom of  4 guys I love taking a peek into the world of  male quilters.  Guys are coming into their own as part of this fabric based movement and I for one could not be happier. Today Paul Léger and Jeff Rutherford let us know...

Developing Color Confidence in Quilting

I get many emails asking me how I pick the fabrics and colors for my quilting  and sewing projects. The writer and for that matter many of my students are often vexed when it comes to putting colors and patterns together for a quilt and often end up relying...
