Being BadAss is sometimes about seizing the opportunity to stand up for an important principle even what you had planned on doing was eating ice cream and “vegging” on the sofa for a bit. Well ice cream be damned we are going to be having an online art show with the hopeful intention of gathering enough interest in it that it will then become a traveling exhibit showing off the bold works of some of the best and brightest art quilters in my happy little BadAss world.
The Skin We Are In exhibit was born out of the absolute incredulous frustration at the AQS Quilt show people pulling not one but two works by the Art Quilter Kathy Nida due to a single complaint of one show guest who “thought they saw” a penis on one of the quilts that were part of the SAQA exhibit within the the AQS traveling quilt show. Get the full story here, right from the quilter herself!
Today I am very happy to open our gallery of work from those who were so generous as to share their art with you. Art they made from their own deep calling to contemplate the human from without boundaries.
As you enter the gallery please understand that there are depictions of nudity and topics that might be unexpected. We embrace each artist and thank them for putting themselves out there to be part of this exhibit.
If you would like to leave a comment thanking the artists click back here to do so as the gallery does not have the comment function enabled.

Fantastic!
Thanks for collating these into one space so they can be shared and admired as a collective theme.
People never cease to amaze me with their narrow vision despite being shown such beauty and cleverness by turning an idea in an individuals mind into a tangible work of art.
Love these!!! Great work everyone.
Molli Sparkles told me about your exhibition and I headed straight over. Congratulations on some important and meaningful art.
Interesting.
Incredible! Awesome! Fan-fucking-tabulous!!!
Wonderful–Fabulous
FABULOUS

Rats! I just heard about this, and it’s too late!
Being supportive of artistic representation of the human form, I have entered this contest. I’ve just read an article in the Australian magazine Textile Fibre Forum. I’m proud to be Australuan.
I am just now seeing this— so I have a question. Can we submit something that has already sold and gone on to its forever home?
This should be an annual thing. Then I could have something ready for next year.
Get better Maddie! I am feeling your pain though too! (sniffle*cough*ugh) Thank you for organising this virtual show, I’ve got a bunch of dicks ready to show off! 😉
What email address do we send the images to ? How do we pay the fee?
Is this still on? I am excited.
You rock Maddie!!
I am so incredibly proud to be in a group that encourages creativity and accepts thinking outside the box. Great job BAQ!!!!
action time!
Nice! I’ve wanted to explore nudity and quilting but couldn’t find a venue that seemed appropriate with all the uptight quilters out there! I can’t wait to design something!! Thanks
Somebody needs to contact this Ben Vennom guy in SF,CA…..he is the bad assiest I’ve seen in a while. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/a-collision-of-quilting-and-rock-music/
Any chance you will be extending the deadline on this? I have a plan but the holidays and work have definitely gotten in the way of progress…. Jan the 2nd feels way too close!
Brilliant idea. Can our images be watermarked with our name (or will you do that before uploading?). Just cause you know, nude images are far too naughty for some textile art shows, but hugely popular on Pinterest 🙂
I made a zombie quilt for my husband, would that be something that would be welcome in this showing? It is kind of abstract, but does show gore and organs and such… I hope I could show it in this online showing!
Samantha, please submit it when we open submissions.. I am sure we would love to see it.
I wish I were an art quilter! Maybe I should just try. we’ll see.I can’t wait to see what the show turns out! it’s very inspiring for all the tighty whities to be pushed back for change
YES!
THIS… this is what it’s like to include diverse streams of perspective, experience, individuality, and humanity. I’ve never tried an art quilt, but this inspires me to start thinking about how to express what this means to me
Amen! Bring it on! Only a newbie, but was OUTRAGED by the taking down of this quilt. That’s PENILE- isation.
Now I have another thing to ponder in my noggin. Count me in. Is there a size requirement? (Hehehe)
Are there any size limitations? For art stuff, I tend to go small…
You so totally rock.
Since it is a digital show I don’t see a need for size restriction. If you can get a good photo of it then you are good!
Nah! Size doesn’t matter!
Leave it to you to take the reins and run with this. THANK YOU!!!!!
Finally! A place to put my penis!
Note to self: don’t read Frank’s comments while drinking a glass of water.
I’m so glad to see this…y’all are awesome. Rock on, with or without a penis. Thanks to Maddie for hosting this…
Interesting –great minds think alike??Or just the whole thing grabbed my attention and has inspired me to do more than sketch after several years, I was amazed at the audacity of the PTB (Powers that be) to pull two quilts over one complaint that had no foundation on a quilt that had been in a traveling show for some time. I am looking forward to seeing what we as Bad Ass Quilters Society can accomplish to get these thought provoking art quilts shown. Thanks Maddie!
Maddie I cannot get the link to work, closing bracket is missing, but still does not work after I fix that.
I have a quilt “Reveling in Post-Menopausal Zest” and another one I will work on…
Looking forward to it!
This is great!
I’m so excited!
I am so in!!!!
Absolutely awesome! Count me in.
Love, just love. are collaborative works acceptable?
Totally Karla!
