COMMENTS ARE NOW CLOSED!!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL AS WE PICK THE WINNERS!
There are a lot of feathers ruffling about in the past few days with closings and changes in the quilt world, as well as challenges as to what it means to be a quilter. So much unnecessary need to align one’s self with just one certain style or dogma, real, imagined or put upon by anybody in the quilting world, and that includes me.
I truly believe that there is room out there for all of us to happily create. I live with the philosophy that the more you have the longer your table should be. We have a lot here at BAQS so our table is endless with room for every quilter who wants to be part.
Of course I have a total soft spot for those who are sassy and more than a little bad-assy but think that BadAssness comes in so many forms with it’s only membership obligation being to live your truth and let others live theirs to the fullest.
I believe in The Democratic Nation of Quilting™ <— pay attention there; it is going to be a thing!
We are the BadAss Quilters Society™ and we believe that quilting is a democratic pursuit and is open to anyone who wants to create. We are not bound by any style, stitchy dogma or rules that set unintentional or restrictive boundaries on creativity.
You are welcome here. One of more than 16 Thousand …. Let the giveaway begin!

Ready???? Let’s do this!

No retreats for me, I’m a loner quilter, but I did attend my first quilt show this year, and zI’m looking for some more nearby.
I will miss our annual retreat in 4 weeks because my niece is getting married that weekend. I will miss all that fun terribly – but will be sending a “Flat Karen” so my friends can take pictures of my virtual self enjoying the fun. In consolation I will be traveling up to the AQS show in Chattanooga in September and the World Quilt-Florida show in Orlando in January. Our local guild show will be in February.
I went to the Hershey quilt show not too long ago. My favorite part of that show is the Hugs and Kisses charity quilt sewing: they provide the fabric and machines, and we make small quilt tops for kids at Hershey Medical Center. You can sit down and sew for 5 minutes or 5 quilt tops, totally up to you (when I sat down, I finished a quilt top someone else had started). I’m also hoping to go to the Pennsylvania quilt show just outside of Philly in September, and I’ve been invited to be a craft vendor at a local quilt guild show in October (my first time to do this!).
Our guild had 2 retreats this year Christmas in July where we got a headstart on presents. Then in Oct is our annual trip to Abingdon VA for a wild 3 days of eating all night sewing and fun games like strip poker! We are taking a bus trip to the Asheville quilt show in Oct. Thanks to all the sponsors for the great prizes!
I’m looking forward to attending 2 of the best shows in Colorado! All are welcome!
I am so pleased to belong to the Democratic Nation of Quilting (TM).
I’ll be attending my guild’s annual retreat this fall and maybe going to a private retreat with my quilting buddies. BYOB and projects & let the fun begin!!
Just came back from a quilt retreat the first of August. Bus trip shop hop this coming weekend! Fun, fun, fun!!! Quilt fest in September in Jacksonville, Fl. End of September another quilt retreat! Yay! Then back surgery again. This will be good, but will slow me down for a few weeks, then back at it again! Retirement and quilting rocks!!!
Sadly no as I am housebound. That doesn’t stop me from joining in with as many online quilt-alongs as I can though.
I attended our guild’s annual retreat in April. I have been attending for fifteen years and have bee n on the organizing committee for ten of those. Love our retreat. Relaxed, peaceful, lively and creative!
No quilt retreats for me. Unless you count me traveling to my sister’s house to sew with her!
I plan to attend QuiltCon East in Savannah in February. It’s exciting to have this opportunity just a couple of hours away, a long day but that works better for me than overnight retreats or trips (my husband is a disabled veteran, and I need to be home). I’ve transitioned from very subdued, conventional choices in my quilting to bright and bold fabrics used in traditional setting—next up is a Baltimore Album quilt in yellows, oranges, grey and green. Not wild and crazy by some standards but pretty Badass for me! QuiltCon looks like a great place to expand my vision, get new ideas, and get in touch with my inner quilting biker babe.
Yes I live in Sparta and I plan on attending a quilt show in Cookeville and Algood Tn this fall. I am new to quilting and the quilt guild that I have joined are making quilts to bring to Chattanooga to the Childrens hospital this fall and we hope to be able to stop in and visit your shop while we are in town ! Happy Quilting !!!!
I just got back from a retreat last week. I usually go to two retreats a year. And I’m looking forward to attending the Houston International Quilt Festival. I’m fortunate to live close enough to attend every year.
Yes, our guild will be celebrating our 30th birthday with some fun activities.
I will be attending The AQS Quilt Show in Chattanooga in September!!! Can’t wait for it to begin!!! So proud & happy for you to reach this milestone!! And the prizes are wonderful!!!
I don’t have any planned so far but hopefully I’ll be able to see a show or attend a retreat soon.
No retreats for me this year but I will be participating in my first Quilt Show. I joined one of the local quilt guilds and had to enter two of my creations to show these ladies how Badass I am. Maybe after they see my work, I will stop getting the “why is that guy here” look!
Road to Can Quilt show. A wonderful show here in Southern California. And maybe..fingers crossed Houston!! Houston is an amazing show to recharge your quilting batteries!! Bad Ass Quilter for ever!!
I don’t have any on the schedule but hope to catch one or two local shows.
I’m currently moving to Denver Colorado so I have to find the quilt shops and shows. I’m sad that the county fair was earlier this month and the state fair is 2 hours away. I can’t wait to meet new quilters when I go though!
Going to Empty Spools in April 2017. So excited! I go to my guild’s spring retreat every year in March. I wear my Badass button on my name tag lanyard to all guild meetings and people ask “Where can I get one of those?” I tell them, so maybe I helped a little with our 16,000?!
I was on retreat in April with 11 great quilters. We just had our guilds annual quilt show, talk about bad ass quilts! The differences in design and quilting is what we celebrate. November has me off the Houston for classes at Festival. December has me in El Cajon at Cozy Creative Center for strip club. Lots of opportunities in 2017 as my driver has retired.
Peace River Quilt Festival, Feb 17-18, 2016 http://www.peaceriverquilters.org/programs/quiltshow/quiltshow.html
Held in odd-numbered years, this festival is one of only a few quilt shows in the quilt desert of SouthWest Florida, and is long-anticipated!
Yes, In September my bee has our annual retreat in Ruidoso,NM and while there we will make a trip to Roswell,NM for theit annual quilt show and also to the Hubbard Museum to see the SAQA exhibit. A fun and quilty week.
I will be going to the Kalispell quilt show in September. I will be going on a bus with 40 some other quilt friends and 2 of my cousins. Can’t wait.
Yes! I generally go to at least one retreat and three shows a year. I am so lucky to have the opportunity to go, I know many do not. I would love to spend the whole year doing nothing but going!
Yes! This has been my Year of fulfilling Dreams. After health setbacks and years of making quilts only for myself, I set a goal of producing 1 quilt that would be my message to the universe, that would be worthy of submitting to a major show and also to attend a national show. Always before I had been too shy to show my work beyond a guild meeting. So I created an original design, took 3 months to assemble it and another month to quilt it. As by then most of the deadlines for the year had passed me by I held my breath, crossed my fingers, and submitted it to IQA in Houston. Imagine my astonishment when it was juried in! I will be travelling to the show in November to see “Event Horizon” in Quilt Valhalla, and I know this will be the best and most awesome because it is the first time to see my work displayed in public.
I just returned from a retreat with Maple Grove quilters and will go on an in town retreat with Minnesota Quilters the last week of September. Love them!
I was fortunate enough to attend a Bonnie Hunter class a few weeks ago. I will be attending a Featherweight repair class with April and Carmon Henry in November. There will be a few classes available as well to learn to use the attachments for the Featherweight machines. Those classes are much needed for me as some of those widgets look scary.
And I will be attending a retreat in March in lovely British Columbia.
I just got back from the Hershey show. a lot of art quilts along with traditional and antique. Had a great time.
I’ve not had the opportunity to get to a quilting retreat yet, but it’s on my bucket list for when I retire. I’ve attended quilting classes and seminars, but most of what I’ve learned is self-taught through trial and error! I love creating art quilts that are distinct and a little bad-ass!
I’ll be going to the Jacksonville quilt fest in September. Yay!!!
Pennsylvania Quilt show in September. Guild retreat in November. Mid Atlantic Mod in April.
Yes, I will host two quilt retreats this year for 22 ladies. Always a lot of fun!!!! 4-5 days with 22 badass quilters is always a blast!!!! Congratulations on 16,000 members!!!!
I will try to get to a local quilt show in the fall. I would love to attend a retreat – maybe one day if I win the lottery!
What a great question! And perfect timing…I’m going to ” local” retreat this weekend. It’s a group of quilters who don’t want to wait for an “organized” retreat, one person rents a space for the weekend and we all gather a few times a year. We quilt , laugh, help each other, quilt, eat, quilt and have a great time! Counting down the hours!
Would love to go to Houston, but will definitely be going to AQS Chattanooga!
I’m going to attend a beginner Log Cabin 2 day class in Warman Saskatchewan – pretty excited to take my second class!
I don’t have any plans for a retreat this year but I am taking some fabric dye-ing classes at my local quilt shop! I was on the workshop committee and hired teachers for our quilt symposium which was in early June but unfortunately, my daughter graduated from college that weekend and I was unable to partake. I am also helping with an upcoming quilt show that our guild plans to hold in 2018.
Unfortunately I will not be attending a retreat this year. Thank you for all you do for us quilters. It’s so nice to see some sponsors that I follow and I will be checking in with the new-to-me sponsors. Hope all who are going to a retreat has a fantastic time.
Yaahhh! I’m so excited! I am coming to AQS Chattanooga with my mother in law. I don’t have any quilt retreats planned for the future but I would love to do one someday. 🙂
I attended Glamp Stitchalot in June and had the best time. Next up for me is Quiltcon East in Savannah!
I never get to go to any sewing retreats. My disability prevents me from doing so – along with my ssi check.
This weekend I’m going to The Creative Place in Spring Hill, KS for a Quilts of Valor retreat. In January I’ll be going back to a Heartland Quilt Network retreat. Next June I will attend the Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival. Last time I had two quilts at the Festival and I’m planning to put one in next June. My quilt guild is hosting a quilt show at the Abdallah Shrine in Overland Park, KS on October 7 & 8. I will have at least one quilt showing there. And who knows if another opportunity will present itself. I have a good quilting buddy who comes to my house to sew when we can with 10 kids between us. We seem to make it happen about once a month–more often when we can. School starts up soon so we’ll have more time.
I am about to go on a personal quilting retreat up north for a couple of weeks. I hope to use the time to organize my projects to the stage that I can make meaningful progress when I go on formal retreats organized by LQSs later on the fall.
I went to our quilt show this past June. Such wonderful displays of talent.
Thank you for this opportunity!
No plans for national-level shows, but there are a few local ones that I plan to attend, including the one my own guild has for most of September! No overnight retreats, but a couple of “mini-retreats” (from early AM until evening). Thanks for the chance and thanks for the BAQS!
I hope to attend the Quiltcon in Savannah this coming February! So glad it is now by coastal.
Congrats on that big number!!
Not attending anything this year but saving my pennies for QuiltCon in February…..my main reason to go there is to meet up with a lot of lovely friends I have met online!!??
Yes! I have been to three retreats this year. One at the a Lodge at Douglas Lake in Sevierville, Tn and two at Kordan Ranch in Schulenberg, Texas. I will go to the Coastal Prairie Guild show in September and the international Quilt Festival in Houston in November.
I am hoping to make it to the quilt festival in Houston, again this year. I have a new coworker who just moved from Houston. He says he usually gets passes because he used to be the property manager where quilts.com’s offices are. He never knew anyone to give them to. *fingers crossed *
I am 52 years old and began quilting in earnest about 6 years ago, so I still consider myself a beginner. I have embroidered since I was nine years old, so I would say thread is my favorite thing about quilting. I will also be transferring to get my Bachelors degree at the end of August, so to celebrate my husband is taking me to the Red, White, and Blue Quilt Show at the San Diego Convention Center. I will be very busy starting in September so this is the perfect time to get to see all the beautiful thread and fabric that so many have worked on. The show runs from August 31 through September 3. Who doesn’t love to visit San Diego right.
I must say that I truly am what is considered a BadAss Quilter as I have always done things that work for me not necessarily for anyone else.
