So what do vampires and thread have in common?…  They both enjoy the dark!

Yeah, bad joke for sure but it is the whole truth. While I don’t think there is anyone who does not like laying their eyes on a full wall of rainbow colored eye candy the truth is that thread needs to be kept in the dark like a vigilant vampire intent on seeing another day..err night.

Is this as fun, no, but it means your thread will not degrade from things like passive UV light burn, or  dust encapsulated in the fibers that are then dragged into your machine. And more than anything is means your investment in thread will pay you dividends for many more years than thread left on exposed racks.

This storage in the dark does not have to be difficult or expensive or even any further away than that stack of “nice” shoeboxes that you have been saving, since lets face it, the hallmark of growing older it totally the appreciation and consideration of it’s merits before we throw ANY box away. 😉

Of course there are a ton of options you can buy, but  if your thread is already out, loud and proud on a ton of wall racks think of making covers for those racks. This is a great way to show off some large scale print fabrics and infuse your sewing room with a bit of whimsy which keeps that thread safe.

Even rooms with NO exposed sunlight can have UV burn just from the room lighting! (eek!)

While you are at it give a passing thought to the moisture level in your home. Dry rot and difficult threads are more common in areas that are typically dry year round but even areas with higher humidity will see issues during cooler weather or when using tons of AC in the summer when more moisture is pulled out of rooms to keep them cool. Of course you can get all technical about this and get a little gizmo to measure the humidity but the safe bet is that if YOU feel good your thread will feel good as well. So if you are suffering from, static hair, dry skin and getting shocks walking across the carpet that is when you need to think about adding some ambient moisture to your sewing room!  Mini room size humidifiers are an inexpensive way to restore so moisture to the air ( and to you as well!)
