Rando Internet Dude : Why do you have to show those “nasty lady parts, nobody wants to see that”.

Me: Oh Dude, I am part of the Uterati  – you know, like the Illuminati but our secret mission is to infiltrate the public with normalizing images and extensive knowledge about vaginas, vulvas, orgasms and scientifically based reproduction health information  there by stomping out the mis-information and shame from people like you who do their best to keep women under their patriarchal thumb.

Rando Internet Dude : Bitch

Me: So I guess you won’t be joining?

And in that moment The Lady Garden Challenge was born!

As liberal quilters, stitchers and fabric artists we are in a unique position to normalize and de-stigmitize bodies through our unique and varied artistic skills.

Having a Uterus, Vulva or Vagina does not make any of us MORE of a woman but they are body parts that are shamed, stigmatized and taught as dirty and shameful and that helps none of us.

The challenge is open to ALL QUILTERS who would like to express their support for everything from the normalization of menstruation and sexual health and education to that of reproductive rights as human rights.

The registration fee is $10 with $2 of each registration going to Pride and Protection ( a little side project of mine) helping make sure that no matter the circumstances those who bleed have the products they need to lead happy healthy lives. – And for those asking why there needs to be a fee- I find that for people to actually finish a project they need some ” skin in the game” as well as the fact that events take time and money to produce.

And now some brief but important words about not being an trans-phobic fool

To be very clear, while this challenge focuses on the oppression and shaming of  Cis- women by using totally normal body parts and processes as weapons, the  BadAss Quilters Society is a Trans positive organization and we will have no  “TERF” propaganda, art work or participation in this challenge. I reserve the right not to share any art that even smacks at TRANS erasure.  – Clear?

The TIME LINE AND RULES- strap in baby, here are the details.

The time line for this project is going to be fast and there will be a standing gallery for the works submitted with hopes of perhaps finding a live venue to display the works at some point.

(PLEASE, note the extended dates)

  • Registration is open April 24th til May 5th 2023  and the cost is $10 and with that you will be featured in the gallery, have a chance at the prizes and be sent a participation sticker.  REGISTER HERE
  • Photo submissions can be sent starting May 8th to Maddie@BadAssquilterssociety.com
  • Gallery opens May 12 and stays open through June 14th
  • A winner will be drawn on June 16th
  • The guidelines are as follows:
  • Submissions to take the form of quilting in one way or another as a mini-quilt-  they are to be FLAT and to measure 16×16  finished.
  • All submissions must include a front, batting and a back and be quilted in some way.
  • There is no limitation of the materials used.
  • All forms of quilting are welcome, piecing, applique etc…
  • No embellishment to rise off the surface more than 1/2 inch.
  • Beading, painting and others forms of embellishment are welcome and encouraged but please consider that if we by chance get a live show for this collection that the mini-quilt will need to be folded and fit in a Priority sized padded mailing envelope without damage.  (To participate in any possible live show there will be an added fee, but we will cross that bridge when we get there)
  • Each person who enters will receive a Lady Garden Sticker by mail. Stickers will be sent out after the challenge join period ends (that way I can order the right amount of stickers!)
  • While we will not pick a “winner” there will be a prize drawn at random from those who finish their piece and submit a quality photo for me to include in the gallery.
  • What will the prize be?   A full collection of BadAss Stickers and your  choice of any BadAss t-shirt in current offering and I have hope that we will have sponsors come on board and I will announce them when and if that happens.

Ok, If you are in, it is time to register and I can’t wait to see what you create!!
