If you were hanging around last month when we were talking about some of my new favorite tools for quilting and I was talking about The Little Flipper you know that I am a really big fan of Kim Brunner and her work as a quilter and a teacher. The products she develops fit my needs as a quilter and the nice part of it is that her templates can be used on the longarm and the domestic!
Well, having the templates is just the start since from there you can fill to your hearts content and that is what I am thinking about right now and that is where this tip comes from. Again, this tip works for anyone using templates for either their longarm or domestic machine sewing… so why not give it a look?
See…. didn’t I tell you?… so what do you think? Are you getting the most out of your templates or are you still working up the nerve to dive in and give them a try?
Do remember that it is CRITICAL that you have a foot MADE for working with templates since no matter how steady you think you are it is WAY too easy to ride up over the acrylic, shatter the templates and knock your machine out of timing. Almost all brands have feet made for templates now, so get one and dive on in… the water is fine!
Our Winner is Adam Rateliff!

As I have to stand to do everything I would love to find a permanent solution to stopping the drag on my fmq this year, sewing on top of a box on a table creates so much drag and difficulties. Once that’s achieved it’s on to ruler work for me 😉
I have a sit down quilting machine and have been exploring straight edged rulers. I NEED SOME CURVES IN MY LIFE!
Love the quilting rulers/templates!! Are Kimmy’s rulers for high or low shank domestic machines? I want to get the Little Flipper and would love the melon set. Thanks, Maddie!
Ruler work is awesome, I am just learning and would love to have this set
Anxious to learn more design techniques with all that templates have to offer. I like finding a new use for a template and making the most of them.
I am just starting out with rulers and love the tips you’ve shared, thank you!
Since I’m really new to quilting/sewing, one thing I’d like to learn is how to sew triangles without leaving puckers all over the fabric…I’m also up for learning anything to do with both sewing and quilting. 😊
I think figuring out the best way to judge the type of quilting design to stitch onto a quilt-there’s got to be a trick to this!
Love the look rulers give to a quilt and learning to do it is next on my list of things to learn.
I’m just a beginner with machine quilting so I’m enjoying all the information you’re providing. Thanks.
I agree with Jodi Wolff.
I would love to have the melons to try on my projects.
I am a domestic ma hine person who hasnt done anything exciting as of yet.
Would like to see how to quilt fancy designs with the domestic, have a couple of small quilts pinned but not worked.
My quilting group is working on quilt blocks where each of us makes one house block 7 times, then keeps one and exchanges the remaining ones with the group to each create our own little ‘neighborhood’ quilt. I would like to do something New and different to quilt the final project.
My goal for 2017 is to get comfortable with free motion quilting. I recently got a ruler foot and ruler set. The melon templates would be an wonderful addition to my tools. My question is can you give us newbie free motion quilters suggestions and ideas on how you decide what templates to use on what quilts, or what quilt blocks, especially when using a domestic machine for quilting?
My next thing for me to tackle in quilting is appliqué. Well, machine appliqué. So many things to learn and practice! I’m never bored with quilting, and I hope to never stop learning new things.
I love the quilting people are doing with templates! I’d love to try it at home.
I am just getting comfortable with fmq. Looking forward to ruler work.
I am just starting in this new adventure. I want to perfect designs in small square and then feathers.
I would like to know how to do curved piecing. It’s not that I don’t know how, exactly, it’s more that I want to know how to do it well.
I’ve got my Bernina ruler Foot on order (and scored a 40% discount at my local dealer!), and can’t wait to learn more about ruler work. All this inspiration courtesy of Maddie’s segment on the Little Flipper! Got to order that next…..
The next skill to tackle for me is sewing curves. Eeek!
I don’t have any specialty rulers and I just entered the world of hst so my next attempt will be quarter square triangles, OR if I win these rulers, a melon is in my future.
If you get a chance, check out the bloggers participating in the 2017 New Quilters Blog Hop, the list is on my blog at

I really need to just practice my quilting! I have all these fun toys that need some exercise!😁
I want to learn how to make perfect stars
I have been a fan of Kim Brunner since she started longarm quilting. I would love her melon templates.
I love Kim Brunner, I love rulers and I LOVE BAQS!!! Fingers crossed
I would love to win these to use on my Longarm. I’m new to Longarm Quilting and free motion is not my friend yet. Rulers will be the way to go for awhile.
Thanks Maddie & Kim
I am planning to buy some rulers. There are so many choices though. I love how the ruler work looks on the quilts. It’s on my to do list to learn the ruler quilting.
Love learning new ways to quilt on my domestic machine!! Looking forward to Juki getting the ruler foot ready for my machine!
I just bought the specialty foot and rulers to use on my domestic machine at MQX. Now I have to find time to sit down and read the instruction book before I start to play.
I love Kim Brunner! Just spent time in her class in Chicago on Ruler Work and bought the little Flipper. Yes! I want to win these melon templates. I am really exploring the world of ruler work on my Bernina Q20 Sit down Long arm. Please, Please, Please!! Thank you, Kim!
One of the things that I would like to know about is… Glue basting seams and spray basting before quilting. I know there are pros and cons. What do you like to do. Also I can’t wait to try rulers.
I love learning new things. I have the foot, a 6″ straight, and a curved 6″ beginner set. I have not bought any different shapes yet though because of the cost. I fmq with my domestic machines. Thanks for the info and the contest. 🙂
Those are on my “Wish List”!!! I am so wanting to add those to my rulers. I have her on-line class, but need the rulers to make it complete.
I really want to learn to FMQ on my machine. I just can’t quite bring myself to sacrifice fabric and batting to the cause.
I am trying hard to learn how to use my domestic machine with rulers so that is why I am concentrating on this at the moment. Thank you for the awesome giveaway.
I just got a longarm 3 weeks ago and a ruler base with a straight ruler. Would love to dive into curves! Right now I’m practising straight lines. :/
Looks so fun!! Definitely want to try!
I just finished a vintage linen. Now I’d like to try a whole cloth quilt!
I would also love to hear about the best options for pens. Which ones come off with heat or water completely, even if they are left on for a couple of weeks. Thanks for the video!
Same for me – I need the ruler foot and then some rulers.
I know my friend is having a lot of fun with these. I would like to dip a bit more into designing my own quilts and getting away from kits.
I have a long arm and I am in the process of learning to use rulers. This set would be a great challenge for me.
Would love to know if it is possible to use two different threads in my needle to create a decorative stitch on a long arm. I thought you may be the badass to know if this could be done. Oh love your videos and take on life.
Next purchase is the ruler foot for my machine, can’t wait to try this technique
I need to practice more with rulers. These are very interestng. I will be saving up to get some.
Next thing to learn? I want to expand my experience with ruler work to get past a simple straight line manner of quilting.
I want to try free motion quilting since a long arm is not in the budget in the near future.
I am trying so hard to learn how to use rulers, these may be just what I need. They look easy to use and fun!
The Melon Template looks like a lot of fun to play with…would love to get working with them! I think I’m the last sewist on the planet to make a hexie, so that is one project I need to explore this spring. I know I’ll get hooked like so many others!
I really love the look quilters get with rulers. As soon as I can justify the purchase, I’m getting a ruler base and some rulers. I’m afraid it will be like fabric and thread…….. another buying spree, wheeeeee!
