We still have wonderful things to share from Spring Quilt Market and one of those is a fast rising star in the paper-pieceing world David Gilleland of Vectorquilts.com. The first thing you will notice about David is his deep Southern drawl and then you will be knocked over by his giving heart that supports his amazing design work. This guy is the whole package and I could not be more thrilled to call him my friend.
David’s love for Machine Paper Piecing shows and his heart is about teaching you what you need to know to makes any quilt you have ever dreamed of. At Spring Quilt Market David teamed up wth the super-duper folks at Batik Textiles and what came of it was Malachite!
Malachite is an 80×80 stunner created from the line Memo’s From Athena which is Batik Textiles newest collection shown at Spring Market. Using simple shapes in unique and complex ways this quilt comes together with ease based on David’s ability to break down a pattern into very doable sections that are easy to master with his method. David’s pattern is ready for you soon as you open it. No fussy copying or tracing off, with his wonderful piecing layer you are off the races as soon as you get your machine threaded.
The wonderful people at Batik Textiles have been so kind as to send us a complete kit of fabric to make Malachite (top) and that coupled with David’s pattern means that we are ready for a giveaway!!
So here is the deal. Leave a comment here to be in the running and then you will need to show up over on the Facebook page at 9pm eastern on Friday JUNE the 9th to find out if you are the winner. I love paper piecing, but ‘sometimes’ get a bit disoriented and see a piece on the wrong way – you know, it wanders off the page so to speak. (With the Malachite kit that would NEVER happen – honest!)
I meant Sew a piece the wrong way (and just caught autocorrect changing it to see again – the nerve.)
I love paper piecing & oh my malachite is FABULOUS
Gorgeous designs! I do not like the mess from paper piecing – I’ve never found (yet) a way to paper piece without making everything covered in bits of paper, material, thread, cuts, just everything! and then to find the proper piece to fit the next shape – ohhhhhhhh!!
I love paper piecing, nut sonetimes my threads in are showing as if i have stretched the fabric to tight. I have tried adjusting my tension, i need to use a small stitch if i use any larger it wont tear well. Its frusting me. But paper piecing is my favorite still.
I love foundation paper piecing! I used to struggle with triangle shapes, but I’ve figured out how to make sure the patch is always completely covered. Now I have to figure out directional prints and fussy-cutting. Thank you for the awesome giveaway!
I really like this quilt and hope to see many more interesting patterns from him. I’m tired of one designer who puts out tons of too similar patterns. This is different and I like that.
I love paper piecing. I’m super picky about using every little piece of fabric with it, no waste. I have, though, accidentally missed a piece on a block so it’s the wrong color… oh well. My nephew will never notice 😉
I love David’s design and know we have lots of wonderful new designs to look forward to in the future.
And the thing I struggle with when paper piecing? All those little bits of paper on the floor and matching wonky shapes with bits of fabric.
I’ll look! I’ve seen David’s patterns and drooled over them. I’he never tried paper piecing before, and I think the reason I haven’t is because I can’t quite wrap my head around how it works. It doesn’t seem to fit how my brain is wired and it’s really disappointing. There are so many beautiful paper pieced patterns (say that three times fast!) that I feel I’m missing out on because I can’t figure out how to be successful at it.
Batiks are the best and I love these colors. This pattern is beautiful in these colors!
David’s quilts are just incredible. In paper piecing I struggle to get the fabric the right size without wasting a lot of fabric. There are some patterns that just would be impossible without it, so I keep trying.
I love paper piecing, the precision is amazing!!!! Would love to win this quilt!! It’s beautiful 😍
I don’t do paper piecing often enough so I have to just about re-train myself everytime!
What wonderful colors and design. Love paper piecing put hate talking the paper off the back.
Leona
Gorgeous quilt!!
Beautiful. Paper piecing is fun!
Gorgeous quilt! I love paper piecing. I don’t like taking the paper off only because it takes so long.
Mirror image is my problem.
Beautiful fabrics!
The mirror image thing is my problem. Also picking the right colors. With this kit that will eliminate that problem. Beautiful fabrics!
Beautiful fabric! I am still learning, so putting the pieces together is a challenge.
getting started. thats my struggle. ra keeps me fatigued and depressed. but, if i push through the intial wall of fatigue, i find that i dont want to stop! the struggle is real.
this is a beautiful quilt. someone will be very appreciative!
I love paper piecing but sometimes I dislike removing the papers. Thanks!! David I love your work❤️
Want to learn how! Have done a little bit of paper piecing but want to take on a bigger project, I live the patterns that David comes up with and they look like they’d be fun to do
Recently started paper piecing and love it. My struggle would be with curves and cutting correct sizes as not to waste much fabric. Love David’s work and his videos. Also love Batiks😍
Wow, These colors are beautiful!!! I really enjoy paper piecing. Love the accuracy & detail you can achieve with intricate patterns. It takes me a few minutes to get in backwards sewing mode but once I do….
I’ve been wanting to learn this technique for a long time. This beautiful collection is just begging to made into a fantastic quilt!
The pattern and fabrics combine to make an amazingly beautiful quilt. Anyone who wins this will be a very happy quilter!
Love paper pieced projects! Other than wanting to buy them all, I find it difficult to piece the finished blocks when the fabric gets bulky (multiple layers).
Love Batik Textiles because of the quality product!
I struggle with knowing how to cut out my fabrics for the pieced blocks!
Although I haven’t done a lot of pp, I have to concentrate to look at it correctly. Sometimes my brain turns things around so I don’t see the correct orientation. ( and making sure the fabric covers correctly!
I haven’t done any paper piecing in awhile, but love the precise results. Hope to see more patterns available soon.
Beautiful collection of colors.
I first learned paper piecing on a Project Linus quilt. What I struggle with the most is figuring out what size to cut the fabric so it covers the area needed. I have had the honor of meeting David personally and his passion for quilting is contagious.
i am afraid to try. Does that count?
Paper piecing was a struggle for me until I saw a short video on FB where David Gilleland was showing the technique he uses. While I have seen many videos on paper piecing David’s calming voice and close up positioning of the camera finally connected with my brain and I knew Iwould be able to make beautiful quilts too. His designs are amazing and the colors he chooses draw your quilting heart strings so strongly that I knew I had to take a class from him. It was worth the 8 hour drive to Red Hen Fabrics in Marietta, Georgia, with the best pet daycare close by for my little pet buddy and I for a 2 night getaway. I will get all of his designs and plan on attending another class there within the next six months. The fabric he used for Malachite is breathtaking and I can’t wait to get the fabric and pattern so that I can get started.
I love this! It’s so bright and fresh looking, but yet so warm. I have yet to attempt paper piecing, but really want to give it a go. I love watching David’s tutorials, and am anxious to learn.
I’d love to try Davids design.
Not to waste fabric when I cut my sections out.
I just love this quilt!!!
i love the precision of PP…but not so much when i have goofed and cut the wrong side!
I love the whole process of paper piecing! Well maybe removing the paper not so much! Love your patterns David!! Keep up the fabulous design work!!
My biggest struggle is not wasting fabric. I want to be efficient, but I feel like I waste if my piece is too big and also I know I waste when I use a piece that appears to be the perfect size only to sew it down to find its 1/8″ too small and will gap.
What fabulous colours!
I struggle with curves love love paper piecing
Every time I sit down to paper piece I struggle – and it’s always with just the first piece! Remembering how to start – that’s my problem
I have only done little things with paper piecing. I love this so much that it is time to try a big thing.
I struggle with cutting the fabric pieces big enough for the numbered space to be sewed next.
I love the results of paper piecing, but it takes me so long. Wonderful fabrics and pattern!
Maddie, love your strong character! It is refreshing! The struggle I have with paper piecing is time. But then, time is is never enough regardless of what the project happens to be. I just need more time for me and my projects. Really love this quilt. Pick me and I will definitely find time to do it 😏
I have never done paper piecing, but this fabulous fabric and pattern makes me want to learn it.
