We still have wonderful things to share from Spring Quilt Market and one of those is a fast rising star in the paper-pieceing world David Gilleland of Vectorquilts.com. The first thing you will notice about David is his deep Southern drawl and then you will be knocked over by his giving heart that supports his amazing design work. This guy is the whole package and I could not be more thrilled to call him my friend.
David’s love for Machine Paper Piecing shows and his heart is about teaching you what you need to know to makes any quilt you have ever dreamed of. At Spring Quilt Market David teamed up wth the super-duper folks at Batik Textiles and what came of it was Malachite!
Malachite is an 80×80 stunner created from the line Memo’s From Athena which is Batik Textiles newest collection shown at Spring Market. Using simple shapes in unique and complex ways this quilt comes together with ease based on David’s ability to break down a pattern into very doable sections that are easy to master with his method. David’s pattern is ready for you soon as you open it. No fussy copying or tracing off, with his wonderful piecing layer you are off the races as soon as you get your machine threaded.
The wonderful people at Batik Textiles have been so kind as to send us a complete kit of fabric to make Malachite (top) and that coupled with David’s pattern means that we are ready for a giveaway!!

Wow that is beautiful!
Love paper piecing. I’ve used David’s tutorials on YouTube to teach paper piecing to the all male quilting class that I teach! It awesome and David is awesome too
OMG that is GORGEOUS. I love love love paper piecing. Like many though, I usually do a practice piece first, to get my dyslexic brain to remember that it’s backwards… Love ya!
It feels like I’m working upside down.
It’s the upside down and backwards thinking that I struggle with but once I get a flow I become obsessed and have to finish the project! Oh and remembering to slip away to a quarter inch before I lay the next piece on always a challenge!
Mt biggest challenge is getting started.
Batiks make PP easy for me, no right or wrong side (usually).
Thank you David and Batik Textiles for this beautiful give away on my favorite site!
And thank you Maddie, for providing a site where I don’t have to be shy or embarrassed about my strange addiction to fabric or weird art I love to create.
I love batiks and these are beautiful fabrics.
Tearing the paper away.
I’ve dabbled in paper piecing and I’ve been looking for just the right project to do a full on quilt. Pick me! Pick me!
My biggest struggle is with the little bits of paper everywhere after I’m done. I wish I had the discipline to stop and clean up while I’m ripping out the foundation.
Wow, what a beautiful quilt and fabric choices! It looks like a mandala. I have never made a paper pieced quilt and am eager to try it. My biggest struggle quilting is selecting fabric patterns and colors. Thanks!
Well, I’m glad you asked. Can you chain paper piece? Because I’m not sure of this I’m a scardycat.
Love me some paper piecing! My favorite way to piece, using Judy Niemeyer’s method I have found I can paper piece anything. It makes my quilting look amazingly accurate.
I am ready to try it, haven’t tried it yet!!
My biggest frustration is making sure I have the right size and direction for the pieces that are on angles. Love the final Results and appreciate it when the designer includes cutting directions for pieces!
Of course, there are the angular pieces which sometimes don’t go in the correct direction. Nonetheless, I love paper piecing.
David’s work is amazing and I’d love to have a crack at this amazing design.
Whenever I start a new PP project, it always takes me a while to get into the rhythm of it. The first one or two parts have wrong sized fabric or I need to rip it out…but once I find that rhythm it’s easy breezy time!
I struggle with confidence when it comes to paper piecing. I also have trouble….well… with everything. LOL 😂
I have only tried this once but am amazed at the beauty that you can design with paper piecing. The Batiks are so beautiful and I just went to a class on how they are made incredible!
I love paper piecing and have been doing it since the mid-1990s. The thing I struggle most with is that there are way too many awesome patterns out there and I will never be able to make all of them! I own two of David’s patterns and I want to make both of them soon!
Wasting fabric, either by cutting my piece what I think is the right size only to find it’s not quite big enough, or over compensating and making the piece way too big. But overall, I really like foundation paper piecing.
I have only paper pieced in one class and itching to try again. I love these colors!
Paper piecing is my new addiction!! Love how ingenious these designers are.
I am being surrounded by paper piecing! It’s not one of my favorite techniques, but if it keeps stalking me, I may have to give in.
I need more time to do sewing and currently am recovering from a broken ankle and toes. Love the colors in this quilt.
Holy crap, what a beautiful collection! Would love that in my stash! All that flipping and stitching gets me dizzy and I hate it when the “perfect piece” doesn’t fit! Argh!
I struggle with not using enough fabric on the piece then I have a little section without fabric. 😳
Love this pattern and fabric. Don’t have much trouble when paper piecing except I want the paper to just disappear 🙂 when I’m done.
I am taking my first class on paper piecing now.
Haven’t tried paper piecing yet. Would love to.
Oh my gosh both my favourites rolled up in the one post, paper piecing and batiks I’m in total quilt heaven at the moment. Davids pattern is just sublime and the fabric is totally to die for, thank you so much for the opportunity David and Batik Textiles ☺
I really enjoy doing paper piecing and right now I am doing two King Size Bali Wedding Star quilts to put away for my Grandsons when they get married
I have only done two paper pieced projects, both David’s. I always struggle with the very first piece of fabric. Right side up or wrong side, on the back of paper design or on the front. After I do a few it is easier. But if a take a break I have to think real hard again!!!
The things I struggle with the most for paper piecing are sewing the fabric in the correct order and tearing off the paper. But the results are so worth it!!
The thing I struggle with is not having David sitting next to me. The problem I really have is finding paper piecing for King bed.
I get the pieces too small or turned the wrong direction when I paper piece. Its not been my favorite method so far honestly.
I have only paper pieced a few times, coming up short on I side when it is flipped over. This is something I struggle with every time I do it
I love paper piecing! I have taken a couple of classes at my guild and have done a couple of small wall hangings. The problem I had was cutting a piece to small, with practice I’m sure I will get better. I would love to make a quilt by paper piecing one day and this pattern would be great!
I used to struggle with removing the paper pieces when I used the glue method. Now I just baste.
I love paper piecing and find myself wishing I had time to do more. By the time I get my fabrics together and start sewing life interferes.
My biggest problem is using the right paper for the foundation if I have to copy. My printer does not like newspaper and I have to use thicker paper. This leads to smaller stitches and hoping I don’t need to undo it
I am so slow trying to stitch on the line, it takes me a lot longer than it should. Would love to try this pattern and look forward to seeing more.
I always seems to have my fabric going the wrong way do I do more ripping than sewing, or so it seems! This one is so gorgeous that I would make an extra effort to get my brain working properly. These are my favorite colors!
Finding just the right balance between ‘not wasting too much fabric’ and having a piece big enough to fill the space.
I want to have confidence in what I can do. It seems like I always stop, have a flash of worry, then move forward. I’d like to be able to enjoy the whole process, without the moments of concern.
I’ve only ever paper pieced once, at that was at a quilt retreat, with a very talented quilter sitting beside me walking me through step by step. I loved the look, but am very afraid of attempting it by myself again.
That’s a beautiful pattern! Wonderful giveaway, thanks to you and David and Batik Textiles.
My biggest struggle in paper piecing is to not get turned thecwrong way. I flip and check and flip and check again just to be sure. Thanks for the chance to win these beautiful fabrics.
I find trying to start and get everything cut out is a struggle. I love paper pieced Quilts.
