Did you know that THOUSANDS of cats end up in the vet each year from ingesting pins, needles and thread? (not to mention all the other stupid stuff they get into).

The required surgery is VERY expensive and does not guarantee survival.  As quilters and cat lovers it is up to us to keep our sewing rooms as cat-safe as possible and in some cases not let our cats into our sewing spaces.

Obviously that is not happening around here, I don’t have a door to my sewing space so I have to be extra diligent since my cat is a raving-ass with a death wish who will poach a pin or needle at any opportunity.

So if like me you don’t have a way to keep your cats out of your space it is important to know the signs of ingestion and reasons to RUN not WALK to your nearest vet since as hard as we try to keep them safe things can happen!

• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal tenderness or pain
• Decreased appetite or anorexia
• Straining to defecate or producing small amounts of feces
• Lethargy
• Changes in behavior such as biting or growling when picked up or handled around the abdomen
• Pawing if there is string  wrapped around the base of the tongue, or hanging out of their rear  ( NEVER PULL ON THIS)

One of the things I have taken to doing is securing my pins in cat-safe ways like keeping my pincushions in a drawer next to my machine, but sometimes I need my pincushion right on my work surface so when I found this  vintage terrine at the local thrift I knew just what I wanted to do with it! The heavy lid means I can keep it out on my work surface and just put on the lid to keep my cat out of it.

This was a simple project so feel free to crib from my idea and make something cat-safe of your own!
