One of the best part of being part of the quilting industry is watching as people hone their skills to the point where teaching and sharing with others is just a natural evolution of the process.
This is totally true of Sondra Millard. Watching her evolution as a dye artisan has been a real joy. Not to mention that I am the proud owner of one of her creations!
So needless to say I was more than excited when I obtained a copy of her new book to review and to give away!! 🙂
For those interested in ice dyeing this book is going to set you on the right path with both technique and supply lists that make sure that you are ready for this amazing adventure!
While not an overly long book by the time you have followed her advice you are going to me making some wicked cool dye projects and then you can take it a step further and use some of Sondra’s included patterns to make the most out of your dyed fabric when making it into a quilt.
On my part I am leaving my piece intact and making a wholecloth quilt… more on that in a future post!
Ready to give it a go?… if so pop over to Amazon and get yourself a copy!

I have watched many videos of this method but never tried it! ? maybe this book would give me the motivation that I need?
Maddie, you always find such wonderful things to share! I need to check this one out on amazon! I have a friend or two, or a guild, that might find this interesting.
I’ve dyed a lot of clothing, but my attempts at tie dying for quilting were sad. Think pastels all one shade, instead of bright and whitr tie dye! I may need to try again.
I love to tie dye, I bet ice dying is even better. Especially during the boiling hot Oklahoma summers!
Wow! The cover alone makes me want to try this out! What gorgeous colors – I’ve never even heard of this technique, but I’m going to learn now!
Would love to win this book and try a new method of dyeing fabric. Thanks for making us aware of this process and author.
I’m actually quite interested in fabric dyeing. I’ve seen so many beautiful things done this way.
I’ve always done dyeing n the summer because warm temps are needed for setting the dye. Living in Minnesota we have plenty of ice! Ice dyeing would let me work all year long.
Haven’t dyed fabric in long while. This looks so cool I definitely want to give it a try!
I tried ice dyeing once with my kids this summer and it was really fun but I wasn’t satisfied with how the colors came out– they were too faded. I’d love this book so I can improve!!
I adore your review! Ice dying sounds so intriguing. Even more so now that I moved to a warm climate.
How serendipitous, I have just bought some fabric dyes, I think I will be able to have quite a bit of fun with them now.
I would love to own this book!
Joan, just make sure that your receptacle holding the fabric either has a lid or you cover it with plastic. Snow, especially, can sublimate, or evaporate before it melts, due to the varying water content of snow. Pack it on really good if it’s a dry snow like we get here in Kansas. Our dry winter air sucks that moisture right up if the fabric and snow aren’t covered. And KrisR, your Australia sunshine is perfect for bright dyes! after the ice melts, set the tub or dye receptacle out in the sun and that humid heated environment inside the tub will turn those brights so vibrant!
i think i will have enough snow to try it next week by the forecast…… lol
i dyed lots of fabric “in bags” several years ago, but still have all the stuff. i need to get some screens and a drop cloth to put over it while it melts. how do you keep it moist while waiting for the snow to melt???
I’ve never attempted dying, but from time to time I’m working on a project where making my own coloration would be in order! Maybe this would give me the inspiration to give it a go!
Would love to try this!
Would love to win a copy of this book. Dying fabric is something I am interested in learning more about after a foray into dying used dryer sheets with an fabric artist friend and mentor.
I’ve had classes in photo-reactive dying and microwave dying, but ice-dying sounds intriguing to me!
Thanks for the chance to win a copy Maddie.
I would love to try fabric dyeing beyond the same old tie dye. Thanks.
Well that just looks like good not so clean fun! I can totally see doing this with my sister bff on our next adventure weekend!
Would love to try dying fabric. But have never had the nerve.
I’ve followed Sondra on Facebook for a while now and her immense talent has been an inspiration. I’ve yet to venture into fabric dying but it would only take having this book in my hot little hands to push me over the edge.
I´m sure this book would be useful for me 🙂
I have the book, and it is fantastic! Lots of pitures, and the text is really easy to follow. And the quilt patterns Sondra provides in the book are WONDERFUL. Pop over to amazon, and get your copy. It is delivered promptly, despite the ‘out of stock’ label!
Wahoo! Fabulous book!
Would love to learn her method of dying fabric. Each piece looks like a masterpiece.
I’m always looking for new ways to dye fabric! This looks like fun but in hot ol’ Australia – I wonder how it would go. I’ll have to give it a try.
That looks like all sorts of fun 😀
I’ve wanted to try this method of dying, but I’m a big chicken.
I’m intrigued! I saw your piece a couple days ago, but didn’t realize you had actually dyed it. I’m interested in dyeing my own fabrics. The more techniques I try, the better I can put them to use .
I would love to try this method of it snows again.
I love the idea of creating my own fabric through dyeing fabric. I think I’ll have to purchase this book if I don’t win it! Will you be selling it also?
Her photos of her dyed pieces are amazing!
I have always wanted to try that- thank you for the opportunity to win!
I’m intrigued to start dying my own material. I’ve dyed plenty of clothes, sheets, etc over the years.
That sounds awesome, I would love to try it. Would give my quilts a whole other dimension, perhaps it is what I am looking for, …I’m in!
