Owning a quilt shop gives me a unique view into the lives of quilters and what they are trying to do with their work. In the past few months I have been hearing more of our customers talk about wanting to give art-quilting a go so the fact that I am part of Rose Hughes’s quilting team for her new book seemed just about perfect.
Rose’s method of Fast-Piece Applique makes creating what you see in your head possible and Rose is the perfect cheerleader to walk you through the process.
Rose and I met by pure happenstance and exhaustion at a national “to the trade” quilting event. Both taking a rest we struck up a conversation and parted with the pledge to work together someday. Well I could not have been more pleased when Rose came to me with the proposal to work on a quilt in her new book Fast Pieced Applique
I knew it was going to be a three piece quilt but not sure I had registered that it was also about 6 feet tall and at least that wide. We worked early in the process on some sketches and jelling our vision and from there Rose let me run with her baby… and away I went! She sent the top with a fantastic poppies done in FPA and I was in charge of the quilting.
Sadly white on white quilting is a real pain to capture well on film so you are going to have to go in real tight on this shot to see all the work I did in the negative space on Rose’s fantastic top! From the moment I saw this quilt I felt like I was in a prehistoric jungle and that inspired the dragon flies, growing pods and fanciful swirls and floral motifs.
My work is in good company with many other amazing quilts ….
