All the signs were there but I chose to ignore them….
The love of mixed media
Never coloring in the lines
Shunning patterns in favor of doing my own thing (honestly they read like insurance forms to me)
Not caring about the quilt police rules.. 1/4 inch, schmauter inch!
The drastic lack of bed quilts in my house despite owning a longarm ( please note that I LOVE bed quilts, making them not so much)
Yes folks… it seems to be true. I am an Art Quilter, and now I am out of the closet 🙂
How did you first know you were an Art Quilter?… come share your stories, the love here is strong.

I love to create using my fabrics as my canvas. I found that art quilting allows me to be much more creative as I challenge myself to think outside of the box. Most of my art quilts are created from pictures I see in my mind’s eye, than I play with fabric to see if I can come up with the picture I’m seeing. I love going out with my camera to find landscapes for my art quilts also.
I love how you describe yourself! It also describes me, minus the longarm. I’ve been in love with handwork and fabric all my life. I discovered quilting in 1998, and took a left turn into art quilting as soon as I had mastered the basics. Now I teach what I’ve learned and love it!
I am an art quilter because I am too stubborn to follow directions. Because my background is in custom upholstery for antique automobiles, I have problems working in smaller scale….but I’m working on it.
I saw a presentation by Janet Fogg. Then I met Rose Huges and learned about her work. After that, I knew where I wanted to go with my quilting. I am still learning, but I love it.
I am definitely an art quilter. I have recently started to quilt/create items. When I am in my art class I see what the teacher wants me to paint and I instead think how I can do this with fabric. I haven’t done one yet apart from my cushions. Im sure that I will get to do one as soon as I can. I dont like following patterns and rules and much prefer to do my own thing. I am also a watercolourist/artist. I think possibly that this is why I want to do art quilts rather than the usual. Its the artist in us coming out.
I’ve always been an artist…one of my favorite mediums is watercolor. Dyeing and painting my own fabrics, or a quest to find the perfect fabric (not always a traditional cotton), and the threads, embellishments, stitching…oh my! It makes me so happy when I can immerse myself in an art quilt project. Beginning quilting in the 1970s, I’ve seen a lot of changes in the quilting world…being open to whatever comes next is what keeps me interested and challenged!
I know I’m an art quilter, with not much time to create for myself! I am headstrong into custom longarmming for others and love what I do, but I know if I started with an art quilt I would never finish another customer quilt! So, I better not start 🙁 Love what you are doing!
My third quilt I designed myself…I never was a pattern follower, either! Maddie, this quilt is breathtaking. I just love the color and line.
