Ah blue pen… how I love hate are terrified of thee… but I need you so!
Anybody else in this boat? You need to mark a quilt either a little or a lot and chalk or pencil will not do the trick so your turn to the blue pen of {possible} death.
The whole time I am using it I am worrying that it will not come out and if it comes out at first it might rise back to the surface at anytime there after like an old and less than memorable boyfriend or ex-husband.
With all those fears in mind I was really excited when I learned of Blue Line Eraser Liquid- in fact I might have danced a bit, but there were no cameras so no proof !
While some people have had no problems with their blue pen markings you don’t have to ask very far to hear a tragic story of a quilt top left in a hot car or someone losing their mind and ironing over their blue pen markings making them more permanent and upsetting than a tattoo obtained during a drunken holiday in the islands.
Many people also have secret formulas handed down from quilter to quilter during the dark of night and only after the official quilters fit bump and hi-sign have been established .. with some of these working really well but others being a bit dependent on the water type used. ( I have hard, grumpy water- it does not like to play nice in these situations)
So while not the only way to get rid of blue pen markings for good I am thrilled to know that there is a consistent product that I can reach for when I need to make-gone my blue marks!
The owner of Blue Line Eraser was so kind as to send not only a spray bottle for me to try out but also possibly my favorite part – the easy pen style applicator!
Sometimes I mark and then decide to change things up. In these cases I don’t want to spray the whole area. I just want to remove the areas that need to be changed. With the refillable pen applicator even the smallest areas are easy to erase and dry quickly so that I can remark and get back to quilting!
I put both the pen and the liquid through their paces and have so far been thrilled to pieces.
I only had two types of blue pen on hand but even went so far as to iron the snot out of my samples.
And don’t think that did not make me mildly queasy… the thing I have avoided doing with every part of my being and there I was ironing for a full 3 minutes! But like a charm just a couple of sprays of the Blue Line Eraser and everything was back to white.. not a trace of blue in sight.
I left all samples to sit and air dry without a bit of haunting- I am thrilled!

Haven’t used this product but it looks great!
I’m so afraid of them, I haven’t purchased one. Which means I have constant headaches with purple ones, chalk, white pencils, and normal pencils. This product may allow me to actually go buy one now.
Can they come out with a magic solution for removing yellow and blue chalk next?
I used to make my darling grands special heirloom Christmas outfits, Christening and wedding gowns. I can’t tell you how many time I had to go over and over with water to take out all the wretched blue marks.
I’ve never used blue pens because I know myself — I’d iron over them! I’d love to try this. 🙂
Ohhhhh! Pick me! I would love to be a winner! Love your posts and help!
Am I dreaming? Is there really such a product? I’d love to find a tried and true product for removing the blue that sometimes gives quilters the blues.
You can’t beat Blue line eraser! I love it!
I’m a blue pen virgin! Too chicken to use it! I rarely use the purple one. Heck, I wont even use the latest and greatest pen innovation for fear of the next ice age. LOL!
I’ve used a blue marker, but it scares me to death! I’m going to hunt down some of this stuff, so that I don’t feel like there might be some unpleasant surprises in my future!
The only time I ever had a blue line problem on plain fabric was when I erased a dot with water and put a new blue dot on while it was wet and ironed it. Let’s just say the dart points were rather obvious! On quilts there’s always the problem of the water taking the blue into the batting and then magically reappearing. I’ve used Aqua doodles to erase the lines with water but would love to try a better liquid.
I ordered this product the first time I saw it and LOve, LOve, LOve it. My fav is the pen, not so much the spray bottle. I found that a little hard to use across a large area. I would rather have a trigger bottle than the little spray bottle that comes with it. Overall though, a great product!
I’ve never marked a quilt but am ready to graduate beyond meanders, vines and swirls and psycho flowers. Lay it on me!
I would love to try this…so, I wouldn’t be so worried when marking with blue pen…
What! I have never heard of this stuff. Luckily I haven’t had an issue with my blue pen markings, but try to keep using them to a minimum! I would love to have some of this on hand though!
I’m also one of the “be afraid, be very afraid” users of the blue pen. I have one, it lives in a box with other pens of strange origins. Now that there is an antidote, perhaps I’ll let little blue come out and play! Thanks for sharing!
Pick me, pick me!!
I have had great luck with the blue pen…knock on wood. But will be ordering this product anyway…better to have and not need, than need and not have!
Would love to give this a try! I have used blue markers but am alway open to try new things!
Yowza! How exciting is this! Science is improving even in a Quilter’s world. I would like to give this a go and see the new designs I could draw, and erase!
My blue pen is still in it’s package like it came from the store. Too afraid to use it. Have heard several horror stories about it not coming out of quilts. Would love to have this so I could try the blue pen after all.
This sounds so awesome!!! I want to win this. . . badly! (xo)
I have a very special project I’m starting soon. Due to her disabilities, my daughter has spent her high school years at an out of state residential school. She is finally graduating in June, 2 years behind her peers, but graduating none the less, and she has asked me to make her a homecoming quilt for her queen size bed….purple and white, her favorite color combo. Not only will this be the largest project I’ve undertaken, the pattern she’s picked has lots of large white squares with white quilting. Now that’s a scary thing to take a blue pen to!
I’m thrilled to learn there is a solution to the blue line marks! Need get mine out and remark the quilt top I’ve been fighting with because the chalk lines keep fading out. Have been wishing I were braver but after hearing all the stories of woe concerning the blue markers was terrified to use one on this quilt. Thanks so much for sharing this information!
My only problem with blue liner was a piece that was on my frame for several days. The blue was used in a stencil background and it actually got burned into my white fabric from the halogen lights above my frame. Do you think if I had used this new remover it wouldn’t have left a light brown line after soaking in a cold bath? Would be interested what others find out…. I’ve heard others say that they have had lines left over from heat of leaving a quilt in a hot car…..even if the lines had been removed from the surface it was still in the batting. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.
I have used the old blue and did not like it. If you say this one works I believe you abs having a good review is a must. Thanks
I did a trapunto white pillow and the blue kept coming back, again and again and again. I finally soaked it over night in a bathtub. That worked.
I have never used a pen of any kind on my quilts…too afraid. But would definitely take a leap of faith knowing that there is something that will get it out.
Ohboyohboyohboy!!! I can’t wait to get some of this. A few years ago, I had a major brain-fart and ironed over the blue marking lines!!!!!! on a quilt for my MIL…after much nervous sweating, I did finally get it out with an Oxy-Clean paste. I just know i’m gonna do this again someday…hope I don’t, but… LOL
It is nice to know that we FINALLY have something that will remove the blue marks permanently! Thanks for letting us know about this product, Maddie. I would love to try this remover.
I too worry when I use the blue pen. So far I’ve only used it on smallish wallhangings (with no problems) but I’d love to be able to mark quilt sized projects with no fear! I’ve got a shop hop coming up so I’ll be on the lookout for the spray and the pen. Thanks for your review!
I’m fairly new to the blue pen. I’ve been a chalk and silver pencil girl for quite a while. I love the blue pen but have at times been a little afraid. I’d love to try the remover!
I’ve actually only used the blue pen twice and yes, I even ironed over it out of ignorance. Luckily it all came out perfectly. Well, the one I ironed over, it did come back a few times and I had to remove it but so far, it’s still gone. Blue line eraser would make me feel a lot more secure! Woohoo!!
Wow, I have just the project waiting for that product. I’d love to win a bottle, but I am going to a quilt show tomorrow and I hope I find some for sale.
Eeek, I marked a quilt once and had to soak and wash 5 times………I am afraid

I used a blue pen on a denim shirt once, and it took the color out of the denim. I’ve been scared to use it ever since.
I used a blue marker on a customer quilt and wasn’t too worried. I sprayed it with water and left it on the frame to dry. When I was sure there were no blue marks left on the front of the quilt, I unloaded it only to discover the blue had drained through to the backing! I was able to get it out but I rarely use the pen anymore because of that experience and the horror stories I’ve heard.
I wanted to say that I too have purchased the Blue Line Eraser products and LOVE LOVE LOVE them. If you pick my name, put it back in the ring for someone else to win as I already have one of these pens and someone else should experience this joy!!
My lonely little blue pen sits barely used because I have learned my lesson the hard way, pen mark returns when least expected. I had a project that I really liked, removed the blue pen marks and displayed it with pride. A month later, a friend asked why I had blue marks all over the project? Mortified I put my piece away and cursed that little blue pen! I would LOVE to try this new product!
OH COOL! Yes, I am shouting! I am so sick of chalk and pounce that dusts away before I can get the piece to my machine, I would LOVE to mark with my blue pen and know it would come off! Yay!
BlueLine Eraser is one of my favorites on FB!
thanks.. I had ordered this product.. no time to try…. but glad to read your review.. and see the pen that was added… I like that a lot!
I’m so glad that you show us that you use blue pen and mark things up just a bit before quilting. It’s given me the confidence to premark and its make a huge difference in my FMQ. The blue line eraser sounds fantastic.
I ordered this after you first talked about it and just finished a custom quilt with a lot of crosshatching on it… I have to say it was wonderful!!! I used the refillable pen and was more than pleased with it! And the best part, the customer had marked her quilt with all sorts of stuff to include pen and it took it all out..
I am now a blue pen junkie
Thanks!!!
I am too scared to use blue marker!!! I have read to many horror stories!! I try ans struggle through with chalk…a pain in my a$$.
I have a very short story. After hearing endless tales of woe and caution, I have been afraid to try the blue marker on my quilts. I would love to become a fearless quilter.
I was always afraid of them, still am, have only used the purple(it’s scary too) so i use very sparingly and never leave on overnight.
I have a blue marker in my quilting supplies but have been afraid to touch it. I was given a Frixion(sp?) black pen as a part of a gift bag at a retreat. Used it a bit but then was told it could come back at cold temps, so I haven’t used that except for marking the back of fabric to be cut. So I ordered chalk and that’s a mess. Would be nice to just use the blue marker without fear!
I have an old old UFO that I used the blue marker on…. White on white fabric, thick blue marker all over it, and this was in my early quilting days before I knew that you weren’t supposed to iron the markings…. THIS UFO IS FROM 1990, PEOPLE!!! Well, I heard about this magic stuff and tried it and IT WORKED!!
(Nope, the UFO isn’t quite finished… YET…. but it’s worth finishing now!!!)
I once marked a client’s quilt with one of these pens and it took all sorts of contortions to get it to come completely out. I would love to win a bottle and a pen and put it through it’s paces, myself! Thanks for the review, Maddie!
