So I have been cleaning up my studio and that means lifting up piles of fabric, projects and  patterns and unearthing a good number of “lost” seam rippers. Honestly this is not even all of them which is pretty funny for someone who strives to be more of a minimalist in my habits. I am guessing there must be some sort of loophole when it comes to seam rippers!

It was getting pretty bad there for a while, I was actually forced to use that little bitty one from a travel thread kit. Boy did it make my hand cramp up! That got me thinking about what we want in a seam ripper and how making the investment in tools that really work well and fit our hands saves so much fatigue!

I have whittled my list to the three rippers that I think are must haves for any sewing room –

Scalpel Style – This is the Mac-Daddy of seam rippers and it gets called into action when there are knots to get through, quilts to skin or if I have to take out someone’s appendix! Yes, these really are surgery scalpels and must be shown the greatest of respect since while they work extremely well they are also deadly sharp. Keep the cap on these when not in use!  Need it?  You can find it right here from my friends at Famore’!

Necklace Style Seam Ripper – We carried these at the store and it was love at first sight.  Not only because they were beautiful but because they were easy to keep around while in he studio. The chain on them was easy to slip overhead and they are attached by a very strong magnet that meant it was there when I needed it and out of the way when not. Another bonus is that should one be too aggressive while possibly using it on something that was not seam-ripper approved and you break your ripper tip…it is replaceable!  (Not that I would know ANYTHING about that – Ahem!)  Best yet these are made in a small family business and you know that makes me love them even more!  Want one?… Get them HERE

Hook Style Stitch Snips – While not a technical seam ripper I turn to this tool often to release stitches in both garments and quilts. That little hook on the end is PURE GOLD when it comes to removing just what you need to remove and not a stitch more.  MUST HAVES!  These can be hard to find, but I have you hooked up right here!!

Which seam rippers are on your own must have list???
